My Dad and his sisters asked that all of the grand kids participate in his funeral in some way. The church is really formal and has some fairly strict policies and procedures, but despite that, it was a very nice service. I played Amazing Grace on the flute as the rest of the family walked into the church at the beginning of the funeral. My cousin Erin said the welcome and set a really nice tone for the service. My cousin Courtney was with grandpa when he died, and she said the eulogy. She did a beautiful job. My sister, cousin Shelby, and cousin Shaun said prayers of the faithful. They all spoke so well. My cousins Jon, Mari, and Devan brought up the gifts. Grandpa Gene loved chocolate, so Isaac and Piper handed out chocolate and Snickers bars as people were ushered out. Great grandchildren Millie and Jason were too young to actively participate, but they were there. Over 200 people came, a number that surprised us all. They came to support Grandma and all of us. Although funerals are sad and we mourn the loss of Grandpa Gene, he lived a long life and we know that he is happy, smiling down on us from heaven.
